Read the record
The record is not the reputation.
As an account of why the war came out as it did, it has one gap in it, and the gap is load-bearing. It explains the mornings. It does not explain how there came to be an American fleet standing behind each of them.From the prologue · The Water Between
The book goes back to the reports made by the people and commands who were there, states its evidence standard in the front, and keeps the distance between what the paper proves and what later writers say it proves.

The evidence standard
Three levels. Never interchangeable.
A source is described for what it is—not promoted by repetition or made stronger by a confident footnote.
A reproduction
A transcription or facsimile printed inside a published work.
A secondary account
A historian describing a document.
Where a claim reaches its evidence through a published intermediary, the note says so. Finding a second intermediary does not promote it.

An honest not established is a complete answer, and I would rather print it than print a citation that does not bear the weight put on it.
No false agreement
Where the numbers disagree, you get both.
The basis is named instead of hidden. Different figures can both be accurate when they count different things.
